Where they fall short.
Vendor lock-in
Firebase proprietary APIs and Firestore query language make migration painful. Supabase is better but still ties you to their hosting.
Limited compute
Cloud Functions have cold starts, execution limits, and no long-running workflow support. Edge Functions are even more constrained.
No billing/payments
Neither platform includes payment processing. You need to integrate, maintain, and secure Stripe yourself.
No AI capabilities
AI features are bolted on or require separate services. No unified inference, embedding, or RAG pipeline.
No multi-tenancy
Building SaaS? You'll manually implement tenant isolation, per-tenant billing, and data segregation.
